Good Samaritan Fund

In your honor, a donation has been made to the Mt. Carmel Good Samaritan Fund. Thanks to the giving spirit, the Good Samaritan Fund helps those in need in our community.

Deaf Ministry

At Mt. Carmel, deaf people are invited to particpate in worship services, contribute to our church community, and volunteer in our outreach ministries. We have an American Sign Language interpreter at at least one Sunday service per month (the third Sunday). We recently raised funds to place a big screen television in the sanctuary to provide content related to worship services for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. In the past, a deaf member has administered a 10-week basic ASL class to members.

The inception of our deaf ministry is detailed in an article in The Lutheran magazine.

Transition Projects

The people of Mt. Carmel prepare and serve the dinner meal to the men of The Clark Center once a month and for the women of Jean's Place twice per month.

Transition Projects provides people with the resources and tools they need to end their homelessness and maintain housing.

Neighborhood House

Mt. Carmel provides volunteers and some funding to this local volunteer service agency. Volunteers from Mt. Carmel pick up food from local grocers and deliver it to Neighborhood House for distribution. We also support them with collections for food and other goods which they distribute to the homeless and needy of Southwest Portland.

We also collect food and supplies on an ongoing basis from within our church community, including our annual Souper Bowl Sunday canned soup drive and our annual participation in the SW Hope Feed the Hungry campaign each spring.

The Taft Home

At Valentine's day, we collect personal hygiene items and stuff candy bags for the residents of the Taft Home, a residential care community for disabled adults.

Grauer Back to School Project

During July we collect for St. Luke’s Grauer School Project The Grauer Back-To-School Project, a volunteer, non-profit cooperative partnership of faith organizations, social service agencies, and businesses created to respond to the back to school needs of low-income Southwest Portland children.

ELCA Disaster Response, ELCA World Hunger and Luheran World Relief

The people of Mt. Carmel collect money year round through World Hunger Appeal change boxes. We undertake service projects such as assembling personal hygiene kits and sewing kits. We participate in the Equal Exchange Fair Trade project, where we buy and sell fair trade coffee and tea. We mobilize to respond to disasters.

Bethel Summer Youth Drop-In

For over 20 years, Bethel Neighborhood Youth Drop-In has provided a safe place for kids from North Portland. Every year, we collect supplies to support the Summer Drop-In sessions.

Christmas Family Sponsorship

Every year, Mt. Carmel sponsors a family at Christmastime. We collect food, clothing and gifts and personally deliver them to a family in need.

Mt. Carmel Preschool Outreach

Our building hosts a day care for infants and toddlers. The pastoral dog, Andy, visits and plays with the children every Friday. We set up events like Christmas cookie decorating and Easter Egg Hunts.

Quilting

An experienced and not-so-experienced group of quilters meets regularly to construct beautiful quilts. Most of these are blessed and gifted to people in the Mt. Carmel family and extended family.
